A Better Person

Obi-Wan and I were sitting outside having dinner last night and the conversation drifted to the fact that neither of us can believe he was gone for a year from our house.  It still amazes both of us that he was gone for that long.  At some point, the conversation turned to how I coped [...]

It’s those random comments …

that startle me from Obi-Wan.  Last night, we had crazy bad thunderstorms in the area and at one point, there was a really loud boom.  It woke me up and scared the bejesus out of me.  He put his arm on me and said “it’s okay.”  And then went on to tell me how he [...]

Epiphanies

Another blogger wrote a great post today about things she has learned about herself while her husband was deployed, and how she is still learning things now that he is back home.  I wanted to write a bit myself on this because these deployments do make us learn what we are made of as well [...]

A memory from long ago

Obi-Wan and I were discussing this morning what’s coming down the pike for us in the next 2-5 years with his job.  He’ll be home on shore duty for the next 11 months and then he has to go to school out of state for his next sea job before going to sea again.  We also [...]

Final hours before homecoming

I arrived at my parent’s safe and sound this morning to get ready for Obi-Wan’s return.  They live close to the airport where he’s flying into so the whole family is getting together here to come with me  later on. I have about 5-6 hours before he arrives.
It’s pandemonium in my parent’s house right now.  [...]

Emotional overload

I just emailed Obi-Wan tonight the following email:
I just watched a news segment on a group of National Guardsmen leaving from this area and I got emotional seeing all the families saying goodbye.  It reminded me of this time last year and how hard that was and everything.  I’m so thankful you are coming home [...]

Reintegration conversation

Obi-Wan and I briefly spoke this afternoon before he was heading off to bed and we talked about him coming home.  I asked him if he felt weird about leaving Iraq and he answered “to be honest, yes.”  He’s ready to get out of dodge, believe me, but he will miss the friends and co-workers [...]

Return of old routines

For the last year, I’ve embarked on my own routines in Obi-Wan’s absence.  I embraced those routines once he left so that I’d have something to keep me steady and my mind focused.  Eventually I grew to despise the routines b/c I was growing tired of them, as I was growing tired of this deployment.  [...]

Passage of time

It’s been almost a year now since Obi-Wan left for Iraq and in 8 days, he’ll be leaving to come home.  In some ways, these 12 months have passed much quicker than I imagined, but there were times that I felt like I was stuck in a time warp.  The first few months undoubtedly sucked [...]

R&R Leave and other IA stuff

A question was posted about R&R leave for these IA deployments so I’m going to answer this based on what is written in the IA Family Handbook.
Rest and Recuperation (R&R) leave is chargeable
leave available to give service members
rest from a combat zone. There are two types
of R&R leave:
1. A four day pass to safe locations [...]
