Breaking Gumby

Posted on March 26, 2010. Filed under: Complaints/Gripes/Whines, milspouses, Navy life |

I now propose that even Gumby has a breaking point.  As milspouses we do have to be extremely flexible because our spouses have schedule changes and all other manner of things that require us to flow like a river.  However, sometimes it just sucks being flexible.  Now that Obi-Wan is back on a ship and practically glued to one for the next 3 years, I’m getting a big wake-up call (aka smack in the face) of sea duty again.  It’s been more than 6 years since I’ve experienced what life was like when he was on a ship with the work-ups, the out for 3 weeks and in for a few days then out for 2 weeks again.  It’s seriously sucking.  Out of the next 8 weeks, I think he’ll be home for 2 of them.  I haven’t whined in a long time about Navy life and mostly it’s been good.  I’ve been supportive since day one even through the suck of it.  But 3 more years of this has me feeling a bit beat down at the moment.  I’m not feeling very flexible at the moment.  More like pissy if I’m being honest.  I’ll get over it in a day or so and be back to my normal self, whatever that is.

Your spouse was on shore duty for almost 6 years straight? Wow…. where can I sign up for THAT navy. I think you should be happy you had 6 years shore then only 3 sea duty…. not a bod rotation….

Shore duty doesn’t always mean they are familiar faces in your neck of the ‘shore’, but if that were the case I’d be a bigger fan of Shore duty or career track schools one after another. My favorite was Seadaddy calling his detailer from Iraq and her taking issue with his trying to get the ability to get a shore duty tour. Because shore duty sailors get out of deploying and it is only fair they take sea tours too. Did I mention he was in Iraq when he was getting this insightful help from his detailer? She is awesome.

I was terribly nervous about stepping on the sea duty schedule rollercoaster and actually feel lucky we are doing an unaccompanied tour this time around.

Gone is gone and it sucks no matter what, but I am no good with the yo-yo-ing.
