Spinning

Posted on June 16, 2009. Filed under: Exercise |

Look out, 2 posts in one day.   I’m on fire here!  Today I went to my first spinning class.  My neighbor invited me to go with her since I am still leading a “life of leisure” here.  LOL.  Anyway, I met her at the local YMCA where I’m a member and gave it a whirl.  First impressions … it’s plain hard.  Second impressions … my butt hurts in ways I can’t describe.  I don’t do bikes … at all.  Every once in a great while, I get a wild hair up my butt to get on a bike at the gym to do a different cardio machine but I can’t manage to stay on one for more than 10 minutes b/c the seat hurts my butt and my hip joints tend to lock up.  But I decided to give spin a try.  It was definitely challenging but I didn’t kill myself on the resistance levels either so that I could at least make it through the 45 minute class.  The instructor was great and she took the time to help set me up on the bike properly and I really appreciated that b/c I wouldn’t know what to do.  About 10 minutes into the spinning, I was already thinking “wow, 35 more minutes to go.  whew!”  The burning of the quad muscles was definitely rough but really the big issue was the pain in the ass of being on the seat for more than a few minutes at a time.  I even put a special seat cushion on that was provided to help pad things.  Didn’t help much.  As I sit here, I have to be careful b/c things are tender.  I didn’t quite expect this level of butt pain.  I really thought my legs would fall off sooner.  And what cracked me up was that after the class, I went into the cardio room to go walk for 10 or so minutes on the treadmill b/c I didn’t burn as many calories as I expected during the class (due to my own not trying to kill myself mantra), and several other girls from the class walked in and started running on the treadmills.  I was like WTF … seriously you freaks, didn’t you burn enough b/c I know you had the resistance set high when you were supposed to.  Made me feel rather lazy quite frankly, and spiteful that these girls were doing even more cardio like calorie burning monsters.  Aaah.

So, I’ll probably give the spinning one more try, next week after my butt recuperates, before I make a final decision on whether or not to continue.  I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either so I need to figure out if it’s a form of cardio I can handle adding to my regimen.

I don’t think I would enjoy a spinning class at all. I can’t believe people just jumped on treadmills once they were done. Maybe it helps to get the kinks out from being on the bike?

The thing about the butt soreness is that you have to keep riding consistently to basically build up a callous-type thing. I loved riding my bike during the times that I was doing triathlon training, but I’ve never been consistent about attending spinning classes. They’re so popular up north that I found it was too much of a pain in the butt (pun intended!) to try to arrive early enough to get a bike.

Personally, I think it would be something good to add. It’s a great way to do some high-intensity cardio and really get your heart going. Plus variety is always the best path to success when you’re exercising. :)

Sorry it was so rough on your tender buns. Hope it is better the second time around.
