A Gardener I Am Not

Obi-Wan went hog wild in planting our small vegetable and herb garden this year.  Squash, cantaloupe, peppers, tomatoes, basil, dill and radishes.  And then he left me to tend to this small garden.  Well the garden has grown like gangbusters since he left (that is except for the cantaloupe which nothing ever grew).  He was always the one to tend to it, trim things back and keep things tidy.  Now I’m trying to do this and struggling.  The squash and tomato plants have taken off like crazy and some of them intertwined with each other.  I went back today to try and trim things up as best as I know how, which is very little.  I don’t know much of anything on how to prune or trim things in the garden to keep them growing healthy.  I know how to water them and let them grow out of control until one day I decide to do something about it and it’s just a bloody mess.  And that’s what it was.  I spent 45 minutes trying to get things under control and for all I know, I murdered half the plants in the process.  The squash were taking over everything and there was a tomato plant growing right in the middle of the squash.  Eeks.  I did the best I could but honestly, I am just not meant to garden things.  Basil and tomatoes I can sort of handle but the squash are a crazy vegetable.  This was our first time growing squash and it’s just crazy.  It snaked out everywhere.  After this summer, I’m throwing in the towel on gardening except for basil and tomatoes.

And don’t get me started on the whole bug and weird slimy things that inhabit the garden.  I get grossed out by all the little bugs and creatures I see.  I went into battle today with long sleeves, long pants and gloves on so that I didn’t touch anything creepy.  I know I am a ninny but again, another sign that I’m not meant to do gardeny type things.  Yuck!

Oh, here’s a picture of what my small jungle looked like.

I’m definitely not much of a gardener either. But I’m trying with my little tomato plant.

Good luck with the garden!

Keep up the good work, it looks great and your first harvest of squash has paid for the entire garden!!!
